POSITION SUMMARY:

The Hardware Engineering Manager leads and oversees the design, development, and enhancement of hardware (electronics and mechanical) systems related to our sonar solutions and related products. You will be responsible for the development of Kongsberg Discovery Canada Ltd.’s market leading solutions, this role is accountable for R&D and sustaining hardware engineering activities to deliver innovative solutions that drive the successful implementation and support of our products to the field.

In this role, you will provide technical leadership and hands on engineering work to support high performance teams of hardware engineers and technologists. The Engineering Manager champions engineering initiatives, is quality-focused and ensures engineering teams can evaluate requirements, then identify and execute engineering solutions. The role will directory support electrical and mechanical engineers, while interfacing with the rest of the engineering organization to deliver on-time and on-budget projects.

 

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage and ensure hardware engineering efforts are carried out effectively to meet objectives including manufacturability, quality, cost, design control and reliability.
  • Design new solutions while overseeing hardware engineering efforts to enable and facilitate the continued development and manufacture of Kongsberg’s products.
  • Design, prototype, test, and release systems and PCBA designs to meet product hardware requirements.
  • Design low noise analog front ends, transmitters, motor drivers, and power supplies.
  • Manage and execute design processes for existing and new products and establish timelines for completing designs, drawings, and bill of materials.
  • Liaise across technical teams including hardware, software, firmware, and test teams to define and deliver solutions that meet the overall strategic vision of product and roadmap.
  • Provide leadership, guidance, and technical expertise/direction to the new product and sustaining hardware engineering teams.
  • Provide status reports on engineering project progress reporting advising management of new developments which may affect scope, schedule, costs, and customers.
  • Build a culture of ownership, quality, process improvement, and data driven decision making across all stages of engineering.
  • Identify and mitigate risks in your teams’ resources and capabilities.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical or electromechanical engineering, or combination of equivalent experience and education.
  • 10+ years’ experience developing electronics and mechanical systems, with 3-5 years’ experience managing hardware engineering teams.
  • Strong experience with power supplies and analogue circuit design in small signal environment. Expertise in low noise and variable gain amplifiers, active and passive filter design, transducer interface (both transmit and receive), and motor drives.
  • General knowledge of digital circuitry, microcontroller-based hardware and signal processing algorithms.
  • Structured mind-set and work methodology, with the capability to understand and drive highly diversified tasks and resources.
  • Proven experience as an Engineering lead or manager in engineering and delivery of complex designs.
  • Systems engineering experience would be an asset.
  • Hands on schematic capture and PCB layout experience, ideally using OrCAD.
  • Familiar with DFM and DFT concepts with the ability to implement into the product design.
  • Familiar with digital design including high speed communication and processing paths.
  • Strong experience in engineering project management and lifecycle, getting products from concept to completion.
  • Takes initiative at their level to make decisions that align with the overall strategic mission of Kongsberg Discovery Canada Programs.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication with both internal and external customers
  • Positive attitude and ability to work well with other departments, product centres, regional offices, outside vendors, customers, and end users.
